Tuesday Tip of the Week:

I could not live without my dry erase board in my office. It is like my second brain when my first one gets to full. (you know what I mean).

I have found that Mr Clean Magic Erasers work great to get the white dry board clean and white again.  All ready for my new lists!

7 Affordable Ways to Transform Your Home into Elegance

7 elegance decorating ideas

It can be quite difficult to have an upscale home, especially if you are on a low decorating budget. Fortunately, for most homeowners on a budget, there are ways to have the home of your dreams. You could add oversized pillows to a room. You could put in hardwood floors. You could add a fresh coat of paint. You could change your window treatments. Below are 7 affordable ways to transform your home into elegance. You could possibly fool your family and guests when they come over.

Crown Molding

Crown molding can give a room that finished look where the wall and ceiling come together. If your home doesn’t have this finished touch, it tends to have a cheap look. It is not expensive to have this done, especially if the crown molding is plastic. There are several options as it relates to width, but to have an impact, be sure to select the widest one you can afford. You can also add variety in each room. In one room, you could add a ceiling beam and in another, you could add ceiling medallions.

Hardwood Floors

So many homeowners make the mistake of putting in wall-to-wall carpeting throughout their house. While this is OK for some, it just doesn’t have that elegant appeal like a polished hardwood floor does. Of all the changes, hardwood can be the biggest investment, but it will be worth it for years to come. It will add value to your home if you decide to sell. If you cannot afford hardwood, then laminate is the next best choice. Or you could opt for oak, since it is less expensive. When your hardwood floor is done, add area rugs to tie into the room’s design.

Enlarge the Rooms

When you have a large area rug, it makes the room feel as if it is bigger. If you cannot afford a large rug, tape some small area rugs together – into a gigantic rug. After you have created your gigantic rug, put up some wall mirrors behind your sofa to make the room even bigger.

The Color of the Paint

The paint color is also another important aspect of making your home appear elegant. For instant elegance, choose a bold or soft color. Paint the interior doors in black for that expensive feeling. However, to match the design, don’t forget to enhance the room with black accessories.

Window Treatment

If your home has no window treatment, it will look like an unfinished home. These are friendly on any budget and add elegance and privacy to the home. Never use flimsy material that looks cheap. Use linen, cotton or silk fabric or lined drapery. Bamboo shades are also a creative choice.

Overstuffed Pillows

For a luxurious appearance to any room in your home, go for overstuffed pillows that are down-filled with pillow inserts. Choose one that is 22 inches and not the standard 12 inches.

The Right Lighting

To add elegance to your home, take out the standard light fixtures or chandeliers and put in designer ones. To work within your budget and find something elegant, but inexpensive, you might want to attend flea markets or go to antique stores. Include a table lamp or floor lamp in various rooms throughout the house to add ambience.

Professional Help

If you want help to improve the look of your home on a lower budget, the best thing to do is to hire a professional. Contact the expert home stylist, Julie Dana at Style in a Snap to discuss your goals for turning your existing home into an upscale version.

breakfast

This is a beautiful breakfast room. You can see by the “before” photo that adding a tale and chairs would help (ha ha) but what really makes this room to to a have a cool (and functional) focal point.

The back wall is the first thing you notice as you walk into the room. Adding a buffet with plenty of storage is great. But drawing your eyes up to see the great ceiling height and a surprise skylight makes the room much more interesting.

If you need help finding your focal point and making your house more interesting, I’ll be glad to help. Give me a call today (716) 912-1581

7 Foolproof Tips for Staging Your Home

7 foolproof tips for staging your home

7 Foolproof Tips for Staging Your Home

If you don’t know anything about home staging, it is professionally application of different techniques to play up the strength of your home. This process helps when you are getting ready to sell your home and improve your home’s interior for an open house. Home staging draws attention to details  in your home, making it more appealing to buyers. Here are 7 foolproof tips for staging your home – without the need for a huge budget.

1.The Door Speaks Volumes

You do want to make a first impression, don’t you? What better way to do so than at the door as buyers enter. So the first tip is obvious – paint your front door in a glossy colored paint, making it fun. You can opt for red, which is a welcoming color. Orange and yellow are also both warm colors. If you have an outdated screen door, be sure to either replace it or get rid of it. If you are going to replace it, choose a full glass storm door.

2.Neutral Colors

Flow is very important in home staging, sticking to the same color throughout the house. For more flexibility in decorating, neutral walls provide the best results, allowing you to effortlessly shift up your accessories. If there happens to be two small rooms right next to each other, be sure to paint them in similar colors (neutral is best). It will make the room look a little larger.

3.Arrange Your Furniture

Have you ever seen how furniture is arranged in a hotel lobby? Don’t you wish your home could be just like that? Well, it can with the help of a professional home stager who will arrange the furniture in groups to facilitate conversation as if guests were seated in them. It invites intimacy and balance. The furniture is likely to be placed in a U-shape. This means that the sofa and two chairs could be facing each other and a end table placed at each end. If the H-shaped model is used, the sofa would be placed right across from the chairs and the coffee table put in the middle. Never have the furniture pushed up against the walls. This is a huge mistake that people make.

4.Take Down the Ugly Drapes

Why do people love to hang those heavy drapes to hide the light? Ugly drapes are a no-no. The window should be left as bare as possible so light can come in. If you are going to use window dressing, make sure it is functional and formal. Use sheer window dressing paired with long panels. If the room in question is in the direction of the sun, choose lighter colors. The suggested fabrics for window dressings are linen, silk or cotton. They are inclined to hang better.

5.Fill Your Home with Mirrors

Yes, fill your home with mirrors because they allow the space to feel and look brighter, bouncing light throughout each room. However, be careful not to place one in the wrong position or it can be just as bad. So, try to place your mirrors on the walls vertical to the windows and not opposite to them. Mirrors also help buyers see themselves in this home.

6.Play with the Lighting

Each room should have different kinds of lighting. For home staging, it is best to have ambient lighting for illumination. Accent lighting will highlight and decorate the room, especially a room with artwork. You could also place a torchiere in one corner of the room. It will reflect a glow toward the ceiling to make the room appear bigger.

7.Get Professional Help

Okay, so you are selling a home that you have lived in for a long time. You know that there is much to do with making sure that buyers are impressed. Getting a fresh pair of eyes from a professional can save you time and money. What are you waiting for then? Call an experienced and professional home stager (me!) today to get your home sold quicker.

Our weekly Tuesday Tip:

The easiest way to touch up small nail holes is with a tiny bit of paint on the end of the q-tip. Lightly dot the spot and then walk away.
