You can improve the look of your home with a few good projects such as painting interior walls in each room. This will change the whole look and ambience of the room in a short period of time. It is affordable to paint your home, updating each room on a small budget. All you will need for the painting project are:

  • Paint brush
  • Latex paint
  • Drop cloths
  • Drywall compound
  • Putty knife
  • sanding sponge
  • Paint roller
  • Household cleaner
  • Paint tray
  • Primer

You may already have several of these items in your home. If you don’t, you can go to the nearest hardware store and pick them up for cheap.

First Step

Remove your furniture from the walls that you are going to paint. Cover the floors using the drop cloths. Take out the switches plates and any electrical outlet covers. To prevent loss, put back the screws after you take out the switch plates. Take down pictures that are hanging on the walls.

Second Step

Clean the walls meticulously with the household cleaner. Rinse with water and then let it air dry. If your wall has stains, you may have to use a primer. The favorite of professional painter is Kilz.  The stain is going to bleed through the paint, if you don’t use a primer.

Third Step

Using your putty knife and drywall compound, fix the nail holes which resulted from your picture hanging as well as any other imperfections on the walls. Let the compound dry and lightly sand until smooth.

Fourth Step

Using your paint brush, start to paint around the window trimmings, doors, ceiling and baseboard. If you like, you can tape the edges of the windows and doors prior to painting. However, if you don’t want to take that extra step, make sure you have a wash rag available to clean up any mess made.

Fifth Step

With the paint tray and paint roller, begin painting the walls. Start from the top corner and work your way vertically down. Don’t paint in large sections. Considering covering smaller areas first, doing so, section by section until the paint blends.Work quickly without much pausing until you have finished one wall or you may have reached the corner of a window.

Sixth Step

You will be able to determine whether you need a second coat after the paint has dried. More often or not you will need a second coat (sometimes even a third) if you are changing colors and especially  if your painting light over a dark.

Seventh Step

Now it is time to clean up the paint tray, paint brush and roller. Use warm soapy water to accomplish this. Rinse, and rinse and rinse some more.

Always wait for the paint to dry before you remove the drop cloths. If the paint is still wet on the floor, the drop cloths can cause damage to the floors. Give it a good full day to dry prior to putting back your pictures on the walls. The most important thing to consider for a paint job when painting interior walls of your home is being well prepared. With that, your paint job will be a success.
